Tunneling Brenda Reaches Downtown

The 340‐ton tunnel‐boring machine Brenda has completed the first of two light rail tunnels between Capitol Hill and downtown Seattle.

The machine has been moved into a retrieval shaft east of the Paramount Theatre. Crews will disassemble Brenda and truck the parts back to the Capitol Hill light rail station to be reassembled. Brenda will start boring a parallel tunnel in January or February.

It took about six months to build the first tunnel, and Sound Transit expects the second tunnel will also take six months. The tunnels will connect Capitol Hill with the Westlake transit station and are about three‐quarters of a mile long. Read more...
